Version 2.0 focuses on the four major hurdles to building a national clean energy smart grid—planning, siting, cost allocation, and ensuring the low-carbon attributes of the electricity. We then examine three broader policy imperatives—grid intelligence, physical and cyber security, and job training and workforce development—that must also be part of this crucial modernization effort.</p>
<p>In February, the Center for American Progress published a major report on the urgent need to build a national clean energy smart grid to power an innovative, low-carbon 21st century economy that combats global warming and creates millions of good jobs. Titled &quot;Wired for Progress 1.0,&quot; our report &#8211; based on an extensive stakeholder outreach process undertaken in partnership with the Energy Future Coalition – detailed the reasons why we need to build this national clean energy infrastructure quickly, and outlined key policy measures to move this complex project forward.</p>
<p>In just a few short weeks since that February release, Congress has made progress on drafting concrete legislative language and in building the political will to turn these policies into law. As this debate moves forward, it is critical that the essential features of the proposal remain clear, and the basic outlines of a national compromise be preserved. Reducing our nation&#8217;s dependence on foreign oil by examining short- and long-term solutions to replace foreign oil with domestic resources to fuel vehicles and trucks, including natural gas, is also an important issue to be addressed.</p>
<p>Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and energy executive T. Boone Pickens joined the Center for American Progress Action Fund, for a thought-provoking discussion on these issues.</p>

<p>I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.</p>
<p>Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon of hope to millions of Negro slaves, who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity. But one hundred years later, the Negro is still not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacle of segregation and the chains of discrimination.</p>
<p>One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.</p>
<p>In a sense we have come to our Nation&#8217;s Capital to cash a check. When the architects of our great republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.</p>
<p>This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed to the inalienable rights of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.</p>
<p>It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check that has come back marked &quot;insufficient funds.&quot;</p>
<p>But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and security of justice.</p>
<p>We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is not time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.</p>
<p>Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy.</p>
<p>Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice.</p>
<p>Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.</p>
<p>Now is the time to make justice a reality to all of God&#8217;s children.</p>
<p>It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of it&#8217;s colored citizens. This sweltering summer of the Negro&#8217;s legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual.</p>
<p>There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.</p>
<p>But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. </p>
<p>Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must ever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. </p>
<p>The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. They have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone. </p>
<p>And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, &quot;When will you be satisfied?&quot; We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. </p>
<p>We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities.</p>
<p>We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro&#8217;s basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one.</p>
<p>We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating &quot;for white only.&quot;</p>
<p>We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote.</p>
<p>No, no we are not satisfied and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.</p>
<p>I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of your trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by storms of persecutions and staggered by the winds of police brutality.</p>
<p>You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.</p>
<p>Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our modern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed.</p>
<p>Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. I say to you today, my friends, that even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow. I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.</p>
<p>I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.</p>
<p>I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.</p>
<p>I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.</p>
<p>I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.</p>
<p>I have a dream today.</p>
<p>I have a dream that one day down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; that one day right down in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.</p>
<p>I have a dream today.</p>
<p>I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and every mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plains and the crooked places will be made straight and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.</p>
<p>This is our hope. This is the faith that I will go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.</p>
<p>With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.</p>
<p>With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to climb up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.</p>
<p>This will be the day when all of God&#8217;s children will be able to sing with new meaning &quot;My country &#8217;tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my father&#8217;s died, land of the Pilgrim&#8217;s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring!&quot;</p>
<p>And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true. So let freedom ring from the hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.</p>
<p>Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania.</p>
<p>Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.</p>
<p>Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California.</p>
<p>But not only that, let freedom, ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.</p>
<p>Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi and every mountainside.</p>
<p>And when this happens, when we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every tenement and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God&#8217;s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old spiritual, &quot;Free at last, free at last. Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was a Baptist minister and American political activist who was the most famous leader of the American civil rights movement. King won the Nobel Peace Prize  before being assassinated in 1968. In 1977, King was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, by Jimmy Carter. For his promotion of non-violence and racial equality, King is considered a peacemaker and martyr by many people around the world. Martin Luther King Day was established in his honor.</p>
<p>King was born in Atlanta, Georgia (on 501 Auburn Avenue) to the Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King. (Birth records for Martin Luther King Jr. list his name as Michael.) He graduated from Morehouse College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1948. At Morehouse, King was mentored by President Benjamin Mays, a civil rights leader. Later he graduated from Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania  with a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1951. In 1955, he received a Ph.D. in Systematic theology from Boston University.

<p><strong>Theyyam.. A  Popular Form of Hindu Ritual Art in Kerala&#8230;</strong><br />

Theyyam is coloqial word for &#8216;Devam&#8217; which  means God&#8230;..</p>
<p><b>Theyyattam (or Dance by Theyyams)  are performed by personifications of a variety of characters each with its own differrent costumes, hoods and decorations&#8230;The one above is relatively simple form , whIch I witnessed recently  at a temple in  South Kerala. More traditional and original forms are part of the annual rituals in temples in Northern Kerala, being the home of Theyyattam ( ie.. Atttam- dance by Theyyams) </b><br />

<p>The theyyam stands as a symbol of good will, prosperity and also to ward of evil spirit, poverty and illness. Theyyam  represents a mythological, divine, ancestral, animal, serpent or heroic character, each with its distinct shape, form and story of origin. The hood, head, dress, face painting,  plate, bracelets, garlands and fabric of attire in each theyyam is distinct and meticulously crafted according to the character presented.</p>
<p>Theyyam is an artistic dance form where metaphysical thoughts and expressions of immortal souls are impersonated to a believer through a mortal body. Theyyam originated from &#8216;;Kaliyattam &#8216;once practiced by the tribal community of north Kerala. Theyyam had grown to the present form through many transformations since it’s origin. Landlords and chieftains of those days are the main forces behind many of such transformations. The community and its body began to use this art to propagate the major theme of social enforcement. The artists are also encouraged by the authorities to introduce new themes into its traditional layers and classified different acts and expressions to match specific needs for their desire. The character representations were very broad. They range from mild to wild in representations. Theyyam is a sect in which old heroes are sanctified and worshipped as the guardians of villages and homes. Yet, it includes a complex universe centered on the belief that a man can—after suitable mental, physical and spiritual preliminaries—don the costume of a particular deity and then become that deity. In this elevated state he assumes superhuman and divine powers—speaking, moving, blessing and even healing as a god or goddess. What is crucial is that the person is not possessed by the spirit of the deity.</p>
<p>The essence of Theyyam is like the enhancement of the efficacy of a &quot;manthra&quot; by its incremental repetition. It brings us a super temporal and superabundance feeling in spite of its inherent relationship with real life at its inception. In the case of Theyyam, when the spirit is propitiated, the living generations enlightened in them the purest and the loftiest intentions that the past represents. The articulate creation of masks and gears from natural sources are intended to make unknowns to known and unattainable to real. The dancer recreates its mythical and ritualistic imagination and systematically delivers the right moods through his body posters. The performer of Theyyam gets himself completely into the artistic rhythm. Even when the dancer breaks coconut against his forehead, cuts his forehead with the sword, or wears red-hot iron chain on his body as a mark of self-torture, he never goes out of rhythm. The person who performs Theyyam while delivering such metaphysical experiences and involves himself completely into the act traverses through three different stages. The first stage is one kind of impersonation by decorating himself with creative paintings and coverings made up of natural materials. The second stage helps him to involve a mental state of flight to mystic heights. The last stage is the accomplishments of the dancer submerged fully into the artistic rhythm of acting the story. Though the spectators feel that the actor is unconscious to the surroundings, the man who controls the technique of dance and rhythm in him is fully alive to the situation. In theatre acting, if the actor looses his control, the act is rated as substandard. Myths in their visual manifestations react to their physical environment and absorb the colors and forms from nature and transport them into a philosophy and emotion of exhaustion and sublimation. It&#8217;s important to understand that Theyyam has a larger purpose that goes beyond the territories of performance &#8211; to all those in attendance, it assures assistance and security during times of crisis, promising to resolve all their conflicts. Which is why the current trend of adapting it to suit a new context is viewed with distaste. </p>
<p> A performance is a combination of playing of musical instruments, vocal recitations, dance, and peculiar makeup and costumes. The stage-practices of Theyyam and its ritualistic observations make it one of the most fascinating theatrical arts of India.</p>

These men and women go into harm&#8217;s way <a target="_blank" href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4522136">losing limbs and life</a>; surely we can do our part.</p>

<p>For instance, if there&#8217;s a lot of crime and you don&#8217;t think the police will protect you, you might want to hire someone to protect you and your property.</p>

<p>A bodyguard is a person who professionally protects someone (known as their principal) from personal assault, kidnapping, assassination, loss of confidential information, or other threats. Alternative term for bodyguard that is gaining popularity (particularly with the bodyguards themselves) is close-protection officer. Many professional training courses identify themselves close-protection training instead of body guarding training, for example.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
In multi-agent units (like those protecting a celebrity or a head of state) one or more bodyguards may specialize in specific tasks, such as:<br />&#13;<br />
	communications/communications protection <br />&#13;<br />
	operation of physical security measures (regarding premises, transport vehicles and personal armor)<br />&#13;<br />
	intelligence, threat/vulnerability/risk assessment and analysis<br />&#13;<br />
	explosives and chemical detection<br />&#13;<br />
	sniper warfare and special weapons<br />&#13;<br />
	crowd screening and control</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
This job is unlike other security watchman&#8217;s jobs. The important person, whose life you are guarding, totally trusts you because the question of his or her life depends entirely on you. Your alertness and integrity and the sense of dedication must be of highest degree. Still, there are more traits of equal importance, this job calls for.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />

Most Bodyguard Training courses are designed to provide you with basic first aid training, self-defense techniques and sometimes weapons training. Although not all Bodyguard jobs require that you carry a weapon, there are some Bodyguard jobs that do. A person with Military training, or Martial arts training, is usually highly regarded in the Bodyguard industry, as their skills are often needed in certain Bodyguard positions. Although you are not likely to ever have to physically grapple with a person, there is the possibility that it can occur, so knowledge of self-defense techniques are important.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
There are many situations in everyday society that require a Bodyguard. For example, many film and music stars often hire Bodyguards to protect them from the possibility of kidnapping, or from the possibility of being attacked by a crazy fan. There are also less glamorous Bodyguard positions, such as protecting a bank, shopping mall, or private properties at night. Often these Bodyguard positions require you to be on your own, hence the need for self-defense skills.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
What are the necessary requirements to work as a bodyguard?</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Be in good Physical Condition; in that persons who are excessively overweight, or who have respiratory or heart problems or who have high blood pressure or other physical problems which would keep them from engaging in strenuous or physically challenging activities are not normally capable of performing the job of an Protection Specialist. Vision should be easily correctable to 20/20. Although age requirements are not specifically set the average is from 21 to 55.   More important than the age of the bodyguard is their physical condition, their training and experience.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
The psychological makeup of the Protection Specialist is also of prime importance. The candidate must be mature and precise in his ability to quickly and correctly assess a situation and respond in the proper manner as dictated by the situation at hand. He should not be overly aggressive, hostile or moody, nor should he be slow to respond or correctly adapt to quick changes in any given situation or emergency. A high degree of dedication to duty and cause is a must for the successful executive protection specialist. The ability to perform under adverse and dangerous situations is mandatory.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
The Protection Specialist must have the training and aptitude in which he can defend himself and his client and have knowledge of disarming and defensive techniques which would enable him to defend himself and his client in both armed and unarmed situations and at the same time be able to maintain control of a perpetrator until the proper authorities are notified and arrive.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
As a  Protection Specialist you will be required to complete many tasks and have many responsibilities. The following list is a summation of some of the responsibilities you will have in the protection of your client.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
1. Stay awake and aware or the changing circumstances and plan ahead so you may avoid problem areas.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
2. Pre-plan a course of action as you continually re-assess the situation.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
3. The hands of the persons near your client are always the greatest threat and as such you should always watch their hands and plan defensive countermeasures. &#8220;If you can&#8217;t see their hands expect trouble&#8221;.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
4. If a close-in attack occurs then attack the weapon of the perpetrator and in doing so you may defeat the purpose of the attack.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
5. Do not look directly at a suspicious person as this may result in the person attacking outside your zone of control and enable the perpetrator to successfully carry out the attack. Use your peripheral vision to keep the suspect in sight and you will not signal your scrutiny to the suspect.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
6. When a potentially hazardous situation arises you should immediately escort your client from the scene to a predetermined location of safety and stay in concealment until such danger has passed.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
7.  Don&#8217;t engage in any Confrontation.  If you do, how can you know what is happening to your client during this time.  The Protection Specialist should quickly escort the client from the danger while another confronts the attacker.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
8.Be alert for covert diversions which may be a ploy to attack your client. (For instance:  a loud commotion nearby.)</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
9.  When people want to see your client, double-check to ensure they are among those who have the right to access of the client.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
10. Protection Specialists should develop both a verbal and non-verbal method with which to maintain communications with themselves and their client to relay information on the changing circumstances.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
11. A plan of the scenario at hand should include multiple escape routes and options and should be changed as necessary to stop potential perpetrators from seeing a pattern of protection develop and locations that are repeated.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
12. Use of alternate routes to enter and leave a location should be random and change frequently. Alternate routes should be known to all members of the Protection Specialist team and should provide for non-emergency situations such as traffic problems as well as emergency situations.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
13. The Protection Specialist should train the Client in basic survival techniques in a manner which shows the necessity of such training and actions for  the survival of the client.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
