Cadets tackle U.S. Army Africa assignment

By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Africa

VICENZA, Italy – As U.S. Army Africa coordinates partnership events with land forces of countries within Africa, they’ve also partnered with a team of West Point cadets who researched ways to streamline the command’s planning process.

Three cadets recently spent three weeks at Caserma Ederle, headquarters of U.S. Army Africa – the Army’s newest service component command for U.S. Africa Command.

Cadets often tackle summer projects, either with military commands or civilian organizations. West Point faculty organizes Academic Individual Advanced Development (AIAD) opportunities for cadets to study and gain experience in the States and overseas.

U.S. Army Africa asked the trio to take a closer look at the use of the Theater Security Cooperation Management Information System (TSCMIS) – a database that tracks command events across Africa, mission costs and event goals.

"At first, we were not sure exactly what the problem was – a perfect situation for systems engineers, who learn to identify problems and offer better solutions," said Cadet Ryan Moschitto, 21, of Atwater, Calif., a systems engineering major who starts his senior year this September.

They began by interviewing people involved with the planning process. From that, they identified inefficiencies, redundancies, and inadequate procedures for the use of TSCMIS as a planning tool. The cadets then briefed their findings to the command staff and suggested ways to resolve issues.

"At West Point, they always say you are going to make a difference, but sometimes as a cadet you don’t feel that," Moschitto said. "We’re trying to make a difference and contribute to the Army.and we’re still cadets. That’s kind of cool."

Having a fresh perspective allowed the cadets to focus on the system and develop ways for the command to improve, said Lt. Col Stephanie Tutton, who worked with the AIAD cadets during their stay.

"Their assessment will lead to a methodology our command may use for the next five years or more," Tutton said. "Their work will become a part of our history."

The assignment’s real-world applications were part of the appeal of coming to Italy, offering something to the military and for their academic major, said Cadet Brian Asman, 21, of Livingston, NJ, a senior who hopes to become an Army aviator.

The program is similar to any summer internship undertaken by college students, Asman said. It offers job experience and a chance to apply ideas from the classroom.

"At school you learn from books and from lectures," Asman said. "Coming here and putting those ideas into practice is what makes this experience worth it."

They may have more work to do for the command, should the system improvements become part of their senior project, Asman said.

The visit also offered a look inside a U.S. Army command, said Cadet Andrew Rodriguez, 20, of Alexandria, Va.

"We saw people behind the scenes, the planning and how resources are used," Rodriguez said. "To have a better understanding of this is huge for us."

During Rodriguez’s time in Vicenza, the West Point football linebacker, was also profiled by CBS Sports. Just entering his junior year, Rodriguez has not decided on whether he would like to join the infantry or aviation. But his time at U.S. Army Africa opened his eyes to the many roles officers hold in Army commands, he said.

"One thing I take away is how U.S. Army Africa officers work together in the command," Rodriguez said. "It gave me an idea of how I’ll do things when I’m in their shoes."

Best answer:

Answer by Richard H
State licensing information should go under the entity licensed. If the license is issued to the corporation, put it under the corporation name. If the license is issued to the individual employee, put it under the person’s name. I can’t help with the other part of your question though.

New Changes in Home and Business Security Systems

The home security business is no different from any other of the many high tech businesses that rely on electronics technology to function correctly. This means that with regards to the actually components that make up a custom home or business security system, there is going to be ongoing change that can be adapted in. in the early days of home and business alarm systems the customers who purchased them and had them installed were receiving what was back then the latest technology in their systems.

Now looking back and comparing to what makes up todays state of the art security and alarm systems, those systems appear completely inadequate by todays standards. For instance, new technological innovations, such as infrared and motion detection technology has completely changed the way an alarm system functions, makes them far more reliable and easier to operate.

With these new state of the art components, a security perimeter can actually be set up outside of a home or business that completely surrounds the building. This means that an intruder no longer has to enter a building in order to be detected, because he will trigger the alarm as soon as he is detected outside. They have range of thirty-five feet, operate day or night in any type of weather conditions and can easily tell the difference between a dog, a cat or a human.

This means that you will never have to be bothered by false alarms and you certainly won’t have to contend with an intruder in your home. Another thing that has made todays security systems far more effective and reliable is wireless technology, that improves systems in a number of areas. Prior to wireless technology, a security system was connected by a series of wires running throughout a building and just like you have seen in the movies these wires could be cut to disable the system.

Not only that but monitored systems had to be connected to the monitoring station by a land phone line that could also be cut to disable that end of the system as well. With new wireless technology the actual components that make up the total system operate without wires and communicate with the control panel by radio waves. Each component is powered by a small battery that lasts up to three years and the component itself is programmed to signal the control panel when the battery runs low, so there is never a chance of a battery running dead.

With new advancements in micro-electronics technology a modern up to date security system not only protects your home and property so much more efficiently with multiple layers of security but the the systems also has self protection elements in it that prevent it from being bypassed. Yet another new feature of todays alarm and security systems is a new user friendliness. In fact, todays home security systems are activated and deactivated using a small button device that is carried on your key chain and function just like the clicker that you use for your car alarm.

The Basics of Network Security

A network is two or more computers linked together in order to share data. From a security standpoint, the problem with networks is that unauthorized individuals might also be able to access that data. Network security is a term that encompasses your overall system for keeping your network as impenetrable as possible, be it hardware, software, or company policies.

Whether your network consists of two computers or two hundred computers, there are certain basic security measures you should have in place. Most of these measures aren’t complicated or expensive, and they don’t require any particular expertise in networking or computer security.

One of the most basic steps for securing your network is to have anti-virus software in place. Anti-virus software periodically sweeps your computer looking for known viruses. You can also choose to run a anti-virus test at any time. Once run, the software generates a report that lists the viruses detected. You are then able to select which, if any, of the viruses detected you want quarantined and removed. It’s more important that you keep your software up to date because new viruses are created and released every day.

Next, make sure you have a firewall in place. A firewall is like a gatekeeper. It’s a hardware/software combination that allows you to decide what goes in and out of your network. You determine the “trust level” to which your firewall is set. The trust level dictates which network connections will be automatically allowed and which will require specific permission. Firewalls come with a “default” setting which is unlikely to be stringent enough to meet your security needs. For optimum security, you should always manually set the trust settings to a higher degree of scrutiny.

Firewalls and anti-virus software are essential for another very important reason: they help protect your system from adware and spyware. Adware and spyware range from annoying to very dangerous. Adware slows down your system, and generates irritating pop-up ads that interfere with your work. Spyware is much more serious. It tracks your computer usage habits, and basically opens up a door to your network that allows hackers to penetrate your system without your knowing it.

Another simple measure is to regularly download patches for your software. Computer programs are tested for vulnerabilities and possible exploits before they are distributed to the public. However, it’s impossible to detect every single vulnerability in advance. As new exploits are discovered, companies “patch” their programs and software to prevent the exploitation of that vulnerability. Without these patches, the software and programs on your computer remain vulnerable.

Network security also depends on common sense. Weak passwords can cause big problems, but are easily avoided. Never use easy-to-guess passwords like your last name, phone number, or birth date. Always use a combination of letters and numbers. Your best bet is to avoid real words altogether and use a string of numbers and letters that stand for a saying or phrase you can easily remember.

Another common sense security measure is to delete suspicious-looking email. More importantly, never open or download an attachment from an email address you don’t recognize. Doing so could be inviting a virus right into your computer. When in doubt, follow this simple rule: delete without opening.

If your business, you should also put in place security policies to govern the behavior of authorized users. Even authorized users can pose a serious security risk, sometimes without realizing it. For instance, “I love to dance, I love to sing” could be “1L2D1L2S,” with the number 1 replacing the letter I.

Here are a few elements of a solid network security policy:

•	Require your employees to change their passwords every 3 months.

•	Do not allow employees to post their passwords on their desk or cubicle

•	Immediately terminate a departing employee’s access to your network.

•	Operate on the computer network equivalent to the “need to know” basis. Only allow an employee access to the programs and data that are essential to his or her job.

•	Put all of your security guidelines down in writing, and post them where all of your employees can see them.

You want your network security policy to be tight, but not completely rigid. That is, if a given security measure is proving to be unworkable or a serious inconvenience, be willing to adjust. You can often achieve the same result through different means.

Last, but certainly not least, review your network security on a regular basis. A network that’s secure today may not be secure a few months down the road. Hackers are smart and are constantly developing ways to bypass security measures. Be smarter than the hackers by staying on the cutting edge of network security technology.
