Anonymous asked:

By securing a wireless network with WPA2, you get a rather high level of security. Unfortunately, not all devices are compatible, and it makes it more tedious to connect temporary users.

With leaving a wireless network unsecured, it is very convenient. But this leaves one open to attack.

Which brings me to the following question:

Is it possible to have a set up with two routers, one secure and one insecure, whereby those who connect to the insecure one will not be able to access shared local printers and files on the secure router?

If one has the following arrangement:

DSL Modem > Insecure > Secure, where for each router, DHCP was enabled, hence two layers of DHCP, would the secure network be protected from shared file/folder access from the insecure router? This is also with the assumption both routers will have firewalls and other wired security measures enabled.

And: will the internet be accessible from both networks?

Thanks!

GuitarDude asked:

Alright, before I start, lemme say I dont know sh** when it comes to routers and DNS and default gateway and IP and DHCP and all that fun stuff, pretty much everything on my router page.
I got an Epson NX515 series printer, and decided to make a network. So I wanted a password, I have a Belkin F5D8233-4. I decided to add security to it, so these were my choices:
Mode: WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK)
Authentication: WPA, WPA2, or WPA + WPA2
Encryption: TKIP, AES, or TKIP + AES
My current setup:
WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK)
WPA + WPA2
TKIP + AES
I put both for everything cuz i didnt know the difference. My printer gave me hell, it constantly got connection errors. With my Nintendo DSI, sometimes it works, and sometimes it says unable to obtain IP adress. For all devices ive tried to use, they only let me choose WPA OR WPA2, not both, same for encryption, so which one should I choose?
OVERALL, here are my three questions:
1. Should I change my router settings, if not, what type of security should i tell my devices i am using?
2. If I do change my router settings, should I use AES, TKIP, or both, as well as WPA, WPA2, or both?
3. What is wrong with my connection!?!?!? My xbox and my dsi complain about IP adresses and DNS and all that stuff, what is going on?!?

This is a quick peek inside a Networking Security class taught by Professor of Mathematics/Computer Science Gail Lange. Small, hands-on laboratory-style classes like this one are used extensively in Farmington’s Computer Science major. This lab class is taking place in the special Computer Science lab in Ricker Hall.
